Get some data from Web (Yahoo finance) and update a excel (MAC -2011) stock spreadsheet. I'm using Microsoft Office for MAC - 2011. I'm an older windows user but a newer Mac user. The data as provided by Yahoo Finance is sorted from newest to oldest. You will often want it sorted the other way, which is easy to do in Excel. Select all the cells with data and then in Excel main menu choose Data and in the lower menu click Sort. The Sort dialog window will appear, where you can choose to sort the data by Date, Oldest to. Finance offers the capability to download basic stock price information into Excel. For users who have created their own portfolios, in Yahoo! Finance there is a link or 'Download' function to save the information into an Excel workbook. Data that can currently be downloaded includes current.

Most people use Microsoft Excel for calculation and data storage. There are other functions in Excel that are very useful but not well known. One such function is the ability to import detailed stock quotes directly into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Step 1

Open Microsoft Excel. First, select 'Start' from the main operating system menu. Next, choose 'Programs.' Then, click on 'Microsoft Office' in the programs menu. Finally, select 'Microsoft Excel' from the Microsoft Office menu.

Click on the 'Data' menu from the Microsoft Excel main menu screen. Then, choose 'Get External Data' from the data menu. A dialog box will appear with a list of established data sources. Finally, choose the data source labeled 'Investor Stock Quotes.'

Step 3

Select the cell in the spreadsheet for the stock quote information input or choose the 'Create New Worksheet' option to place the stock quote in a new worksheet. After selecting either option, select 'OK' from the dialog box.

Step 4

Type the stock ticker symbol into the next Microsoft Excel dialog box. If the user wants to update the stock quote in the future, choose 'Use this value/reference for future refreshes.' Also check the second check box if you would like the information to refresh on its own.

Save the Microsoft Excel file for future use. Select 'Save' from the main file menu, name the file and choose the appropriate place on the computer hard drive to save it.

2. Right click on VBAProject (your Excel Filename) and select Insert->Module. A default Module1 will be inserted. Click on Module1 and paste the VBA code below on the right hand side of the Visual Basic Editor. 4. Click on Save and then File->Close to return to Microsoft Excel. In Excel, try out the downloading of data by going to
Excel 2003:
Go to Tools->Macro->Macros…, select the Download macro and click run
Excel 2007/2010/2013:
Go to Developer->Macros, select the Download macro and click run.
This will initiate a download of Stock Prices from Yahoo! Finance.
What we have written is a subroutine that downloads stock data automatically and can be executed by Excel. It takes 'stockSymbol', 'StartDate' and 'EndDate' as parameters.

• stockSymbol is the variable containing a stock symbol such as “BAC”.
• period1 and period2 specifies the start date and end date to download data.
• The “cookie” and “crumb” (extracted from response) required is extracted with the following VBA codes.
