Anbe Aaruyire (Tamil: அன்பே ஆருயிரே, English: Darling) is a 2005 Tamil languageromantic drama film directed by S. J. Surya. The film stars him, debutant Nila, Urvasi, Santhana Bharathi and Santhanam. The score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman. The movie was met with controversy even before release due to its original name of 'B.F.,' which according to the director stood for 'best friend' but is also a common acronym for 'blue film' in India. A contest was subsequently held in which members of the public were invited to suggest names. It is a spiritual successor of S. J. Surya's 2000 film Kushi starring Vijay and Jyothika.

Plot[edit]

Siva (S. J. Surya) is an investigative scribe who shares a live-in relationship with rich and bratty Madhu (Nila). They have hot-headed run-ins and even hotter patch-ups. Things come to a head when Madhu starts a restaurant with a brother of her friend. Nosy and envious Siva cannot take it, and this causes a split between the duo. Fun starts as the fantasy element appears in the form of their apparitionalalter egos. Eventually they come together, but there is plenty of over-the-top entertainment aimed at a post-teen youth audience. Anbe Aaruyire features the memories of each other in a human lookalike appearances. These memories remind them of their good times and the inner love for each other, which help in their reunion.

Production[edit]

SJ Surya announced a film titled Isai in 2004 shortly after the release of New, when he revealed that A. R. Rahman would also collaborate for two further ventures titled Anbulla Nanbane and Aezhumazhai vs Chitra.^[1] While Isai was postponed, Anbulla Nanbane developed under the title Best Friend, before the title Anbe Aaruyire (2005) was finalised.^[2] The film was initially titled BF, an acronym of Best Friend but he was met with a protest from Tamil Protection Movement led by PMK leader Ramadoss and Dalit Panthers of India leader Thol Thirumavalavan to change the title. After three months of its launch, Surya changed the name from BF to Ah Aah, the first two letters in the Tamil Alphabet.^[3]Featuring himself in the lead role again, he signed up newcomer Meera Chopra for the film and rechristened her under the stage name Nila, after initially considering the stagename of Junior Simran, owing to her likeness to Simran. He revealed that he was inspired to make the film to convey that young lovers must give each other space and wanted to showcase that attitudes towards relationships by the Indian youth was changing from the previous decade.^[4][5] He also called the film a 'sequel to Kushi (2000)', revealing that the film's lead actors would have similar ego clashes.^[6]

Soundtrack[edit]

The soundtrack features six songs composed by A. R. Rahman and lyrics penned by Vaali.^[7] The song 'Anbe Aaruyire' was initially composed in 2004 for the shelved K. S. Ravikumar-Rajinikanth venture Jaggubhai, and Surya requested Rahman if the song could be used in his film instead.^{[citation needed]}

Release[edit]

Like New, the film faced hurdles prior to release with the censor boards insisting on several cuts and Surya's ongoing legal tussles meant the film was delayed. The film opened to mixed reviews in September 2005, with Sify.com labelling it as 'adult entertainment' though added he 'tries hard to bring his character Shiva to life but has to go miles as far as dialogue delivery and voice modulation goes but has improved leaps and bound on the dancing front'.^[8] The film became his fourth consecutive commercial success in Tamil films, with Surya adamant on thanking his crew for helping get through the controversies, labelling that 'team effort' helped them overcome the problems.^[5]

Sarvam Thaala Mayam (English: Omnipresence of Rhythm), also titled Madras Beats, is a 2019 Tamil-language musicaldrama film written and directed by Rajiv Menon. The film stars G. V. Prakash Kumar and Aparna Balamurali in the lead roles, with a supporting cast including Nedumudi Venu, Vineeth, Kumaravel, Santha Dhananjayan, and Dhivyadharshini. The film features music composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by Ravi Yadav, and editing by Anthony.

Returning to direction after 19 years, Menon makes a solid comeback with a film that is relevant, entertaining, and inspirational in parts. Sarvam Thaala Mayam works fittingly.^[1] The film released on 1 February 2019 to mostly positive reviews.^[2]

Premise[edit]

Menon’s film is a musical drama where the worlds of a renowned mridangam player Vembu Iyer (Nedumudi Venu); an expert mridangam maker Johnson (Kumaravel); and the latter's son Peter Johnson (G. V. Prakash Kumar), a crazy Thalapathy Vijay fan, collide. The events that follow form the crux of the story.

Production[edit]

In March 2016, it was widely reported in the media that Rajiv Menon would begin work on his third directorial venture, after he had taken a sabbatical from the profession following the release of his previous film, Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000). Titled Sarvam Thaala Mayam, G. V. Prakash Kumar was signed on to play the lead role of a percussionist in the film, while A. R. Rahman was selected to compose the film's music.^[3] Pre-production work took place in mid-2016, and the team finalised Sai Pallavi to play the female lead role.^[4] Other actors including Nedumudi Venu and Cheenu Mohan were also approached to play key roles in the film, but production failed to take off in November 2016 as planned and the project was delayed.^[5][6]

In March 2017, Menon denied that the film was dropped and noted that a promotional photo shoot with Prakash Kumar was imminent.^[7] Prakash Kumar revealed that the story was set in two states and was inspired by incidents from the lives of real musicians.^[8] During the period, Prakash Kumar also took professional mridangam lessons from percussionist Umayalpuram Sivaraman to equip himself for the character.^[9] After further brief delays, the film was officially launched on 29 November 2017 and the shoot began thereafter. Sai Pallavi's unavailability meant that the team replaced her with Aparna Balamurali, after Menon was impressed with her performance in the Malayalam film, Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), and called her for a successful audition.^[10] An ensemble cast of Nedumudi Venu, Santha Dhananjayan, Vineeth, Kumaravel, Sumesh and Athira was also announced with the launch, while Ravi Yadav and Anthony were confirmed as the film's cinematographer and editor respectively.^[11][12] Actress Dhivyadharshini also later joined the film during the first schedule, which carried on until the end of 2017.^[13]

The film album incorporates six feature songs all together, excluding instrumental tracks. The film's director Menon has also composed a song which Rahman has curated.^[14]

Development[edit]

Rahman began composing for the film in early 2016 and by May, it was revealed that two songs had already been completed.^[15] As the film was 'music-based', Menon required all of the songs to be completed before production began and by November 2016, Rahman had finished composing nine songs for the film and composed parts of the background score.^[16][17] The film's songs have lyrics written by Madhan Karky, Arunraja Kamaraj and Na. Muthukumar, who worked in the film before his death in August 2016.^[18]

Background Score[edit]

A.R. Rahman used many different, unique instruments in this soundtrack. In A Journey of Peter, Peter encounters Musical Instruments Of North India, Musical instruments of Rajasthan & Musical Instruments of North East.^[26] These musical instruments are part of the background score. Rahman & his ensemble Qutub-E-Kripa gave Indian Regionals music & Carnatic music.^[27] A.R. Rahman used a western African musical instrument called Kora for the film. It is a 21 string lute-bridge-harp extensively used in Africa.^[28]
